Identifying Mold
The most common places to look for mold is where water is likely to be or where it has likely been, because mold problems are caused by water intrusions. Mold can be found in six major areas: high areas, low areas, hot areas, cold areas, hidden areas, and open areas.
- High areas are roofs, attics, dormers and skylights.
- Low areas are basements, crawl spaces, and foundations.
-
Hot areas are plumbing pipes and fixtures, water heaters, toilets, sinks, dishwashers, showers, washers, and flooring beneath all of those areas.
- Areas that touch the outside walls, corners, closets, and areas cooled by air conditioning are called cold areas.
-
Any area inside exterior walls, ceilings or space where water pipes exist, air conditioning ducts, behind and beneath cabinets, furniture and shelfing, storage containers, under sinks, on walls behind furniture and appliances, behind wallpaper, under baseboards, carpet and vinyl flooring, and in HVAC ducts and drip pans are considered hidden areas.
- Open areas are areas around doors and windows.
