Mold Containment

Part of our job is to remove mold contamination as quickly and as safely as possible. When working with mold, it is extremely important to find a way to keep the contamination from spreading into other ares. It is our responsibility, as the remediator, to prevent the spread of mold. That is why the first step, after identifying the problem, is to set up a containment barrier.

There are three different types of containment. They are: source containment, local containment, and full-scale containment. Each type is used for specific types and degrees of contamination.

Source containment is used when treating small areas of mold contamination. A small area is approximately 10 square feet or less.

Local containment is more complex than source containment and is used when moderate levels of mold growth are seen or suspected to be present, and when the mold contamination covers a surface area of approximately 10-100 square feet. It is necessary to build a structural enclosure around the contamination before starting the remediation. This keeps the work area away from the clean or unaffected area of a room.

The third type of containment used in mold remediation is called full-scale containment. This is used when large amounts of mold contamination is found or suspected to be present, and the area cannot be safely or effectively remediated with source or local containment. The surface area of the contamination is approximately 100 square feet or larger.

With full-scale containment, an entire room or building section is considered the containment area. It is separated from surrounding unaffected areas with critical barriers, which are large sheets of poly sheeting. Containing the area is critical as it reduces the amount of spores and dust released during the remediation project.
