Examples of Bad Mold

There are a variety of types of mold and some are even considered "good" because of what they do for us. An example would be the mold that exists in soil, on plants, and on dead and decaying things. Without these molds, our environment would be filled with dead plants and animals. The process is called decomposition and is critical to the life cycle.

Other molds are considered "bad" because of what they do to us. Most cause allergies and other health problems. Some common "bad" molds are acremonium, which is found on dead plants, and grows on wet building materials like ceiling tiles, paper, and drywall. Another is alternaria, which causes infections and allergies. This type of mold is also found on plants, in the air, on foods and manure.

Other bad molds are aureobasidium, a yeast-like fungus, usually pink or black, and found in bathroom window frames or on caulk. Basidiospores are associated with "dry rot", mushrooms, toadstools, and rusts. Botrytis is a type of mold that causes both allergies and asthma. It is found on plants and is common in greenhouses.

This is just a few examples of "bad" mold. There are literally hundreds of kinds of mold.
